Born 1819-1899, Grisi was an Italian ballerina of the Romantic era and was a protege of Jules Perrot.

She received her early training at the ballet school of La Scala in Milan.

Grisi grew up in a poor family who were all talented opera singers; therefore, she soon had to drop out of dance and began to tour with an opera company.

She was on of the most charming and popular ballerinas ever to grace the Opera's stage. She was known for her versatile performance ability, which striked Perrot's attention. Perrot noticed her immense talent, which inspired him to create the role of Giselle for her. Giselle had lauched Grisi into fame at a single bound, and by the end of 1841 she had performed 26 times in little more than six months.

Carlotta remained the principal ballerina of the Opera from 1841 to 1849.

Grisi finished out her dance career in St. Petersburg from 1850 to 1853, appearing in performances such as, The Naiad and the Fisherman, The War of the Women, and Gazelda.

She later retired near Geneva.

Choreographed by Jules Perrot in 1845.

Showed off each of the dancers' individual talents.

There were six performances; became a legendary ballet.
